Michael Sheedy (Sheedy/Sheehy McNamara)
spouse1.Catherine Murphy
spouse2.Bridget Ryan
Preface by Jenny Fawcett
Michael Sheedy is claimed by Syd Sheedy to be the son of John Sheedy per Isabella,
and the grandson of James Sheedy per Tellicherry,[one of alledged six brothers
transported to New South Wales.]
The death certificate and the headstone of this Michael Sheedy states that he died in
1885 age 63years (so born c1822: it also stated that he was a native of (Briuel?)Limerick
(Bruree?near Kilmallock?].
The certificate also shows that Michael's parents were John Sheedy and Ellen unknown, and
that Michael had been married twice.(Once in Melbourne, details unknown, and then to Bridget
Ryan in NSW. )
The certificate states Michael had spent 25 years in New South Wales and was buried in the
Rokewood Cemetery.
Whilst Michael's marriage to Bridget Ryan is recorded in NSW, the only candidate for his
marriage in Melboure is that of a Michael Sheedy who married in Melbourne to
Catherine Murphy in 1860 . This marriage certificate shows that Michael Sheedy was
the son of John Sheedy (laborer) and Ellen Gore and he was born in Limerick c 1822 [age
38 years].(Bruree is near Limerick). The certificate shows that Michael was a bachelor,
he normally resided in Melbourne and that he worked as a labourer.
Catherine Murphy was from county Armagh, a spinister of 30 years of age who worked as a
servant aged 30 and usually resided in Melbourne. She was the daughter of Patrick Murphy
and Catherine Meeny [?].
Michael's later death certificate places him as arriving in NSW in c1860,so must have been
shortly after his marriage to Catherine Murphy IF that information is correct.
Michael married again in 1867 at Sydney to Bridget Ryan. His marriage certificate confirms
that he was born in Ireland and his parents were John Sheedy (farmer) and Ellen Gore: also
that Michael was a widower and was 46 years of age.
Bridget's parents were listed as George Ryan (farmer) and Johanna Dwyer.
Michael and Bridget married in July 1867 at
If Michael Sheedy is indeed the son of John Sheedy who was transported per Isabella,
then it needs to be noted that his father was trialled at Charleville (Ireland) under
the name of John Sheedy/Sheehy McNamara.
To locate a shipping record for this Michael may mean that Sheedy, Sheady, McNamara
and Sheehy names are examined.

Bridget Sheedy's death certificate states that she died on the 18th
of September 1890 at 10 Westford Street (town not stated).
Bridget is listed as being 40 years of age (so born c 1850) and the
widow of Michael Sheedy. Bridget's death cause was given as Broncial?
Asthma, and her attendendant was Dr McLeod, who had last seen Bridget
on the 15th September.
Mary Ellen Sheedy, the daughter of Bridget and Michael, was the informant
on the occasion of her mother's death, she was then residing also at
10 Woodford street.
Bridget was buried on the 20th September 1890 at the Rookwood roman
catholic cemetery (undertaker - Thomas Dixon). The minister attending
the burial was Father James.J.O'Reilly, the witnesses were Rachel Walsh,
and Elizabeth Hart.
Bridget was stated to have been born at Co Tipperary, and had spent
26 years in New South Wales. This would be incorrect, as she married
in 1867 (so she had spent at least 32 years in NSW).
Her marriage place was stated to have been St Mary's Roman Catholic
church at Sydney, and was alledged to have married when she was 17
to Michael Sheedy.
Surviving issue were Mary E (21years of age) and Johanna (19).
Four males and four females are listed as being deceased (no names).
note: there was Michael Sheehy m Bridget Ryan in Maitland, 1871, so researchers need to
be careful not to confuse the two families, as Sheedy is often misread, or mispelt, Sheehy.
