Michael Sheedy per Earl St Vincent
and Margaret Walsh
Preface by Jenny Fawcett
Please note: this family is still being researched and information
should be verified by official and contemporary sources:
Michael Sheedy is alledged by Syd Sheedy
to be one of 6 brothers transported to New South Wales.
At this time, the parents of these six brothers have not yet
been determined.Syd alledges that Michael was the only
brother who was not married at his time of arrival in
Australia.
Michael is recorded as having been tried at Limerick Co,
in march 1817, and recieved a seven year sentence.
he was then 23 years of age, and a native of Limerick,
a labourer by occupation.
Michael was transported to Australia as a convict aboard
the vessel Earl St Vincent, a convict transport
of 412 tons, under the command of Captain Simpson. It had
departed Cork on the 8th of August and arrived at Sydney
on the 16th of December with 160 male prisoners. [+]
Michael was described as being 5.4 1/2, with a fair
to ruddy complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes.A look
at the description list of many Sheedy convicts will
reveal many with similar complexion and hair colour.
Michael worked his way out of the convict system by
becoming a police conductor. It was common for convicts to work
their way out, simply because it was one of the quickest ways
through the system but Michael's rise to conductor was
rather unusual for a convict.[JF]
Michael's alledged brothers are
John Sheedy per Mangles
James Sheedy [McNamara] per Tellicherry
Timothy Sheedy per Providence
Patrick Sheedy per Marquis of Wellington
George Sheedy per Southworth
