Preface by Jenny Williams Fawcett Michael Sheady was (according to his service record) born c1799 in the parish of Glenndagh, in or near the town of Limerick, county of Limerick. On the 31st May 1818, at the age of 19, he joined the 21st Regiment of Foot at Limerick.He was normally a labourer by occupation, in the 21st he served as a corporal for '3 years and 77 days'.. Michael's service record also reveals that he served eight years in the West Indies, and a further six years in Van Diemens Land (Tasmania-Aust). 30th May 1818 - 25th Nov 1823 Private 26th Nov 1823 - 24th Dec 1823 Corporal (promoted) 25th Dec 1823 - 22nd Feb 1828 Private (reduced) 23rd Feb 1828 - 17th Oct 1828 Corporal (promoted) 18th Oct 1828 - 31st Dec 1828 Private (reduced). 1st Jan 1829 - 5th SEpt 1838 Private 6th Sept 1838 - 28th Feb 1839 Corporal (promoted) 29th Feb 1839 - 15th May 1840 Discharged 15th May 1840. As the records show Michael Sheady was finally discharged on the 15th of May 1840 having served over twenty oen years in the army.
