The following index is for references I have transcribed from the Melbourne "Argus".
Melbourne was and still is the central city in Victoria, and was the major landing port
for arrivals from overseas.
These references are advertisements placed in the Argus for the purpose of communicating
information to family and friends who for the main had arrived in Australia, though some references
are for people leaving from Australia or about relatives overseas.
They usually detail where a person had come from and often by what ship and the references can
also hold information on occupations,and or family and friends and residence last known at in
Victoria or elsewhere in Australia, or may containinformation to state that family members had
arrived.

Newspapers covering most major ports will have similar lists and often local newspapers for
outlying towns carried similar advertisements, and any of these may have extremely useful
identifying information about possible and or family members.
The People firstmentioned are usually residents within Vict or other Australian States or
where known to be here and thus the advertisements are directed at same.
