Patrick Sheedy & Julia Connery
Preface by Jenny Fawcett
Patrick Sheedy, and his brother Michael, sons of Michael Sheedy
and Margaret Walsh, were from Galbally, Glen of Aherlow, Co Tippy.
The brothers arrived in New South Wales as immigrants
per Lascar, on the 11th Nov 1841, having departed
Cork,Ireland on the 28th July of that year.
The family group consisted of Patrick and his wife Julia,
and their four children (Marg,Michael,Mary & Cath), and
Patrick's brother Michael, and their niece Mary Ann
Blackburn,[age 20] and two cousins of Julia's by the
name of Margaret Gorman, one of whom was to shortly
become the wife of Michael Sheedy [bro of Pat].
After the vessel arrived at NSW, gratuities were
issed to those who had assisted favourably on the journey
to Australia, including Mr Clements, (teacher) Patrick and
Michael Sheedy, and others.
Patrick was assigned to Mr Klensendoriffe of Limestone Plains
{Queanbeyan/Canberra} at a yearly wage of £20,and was accompanied
there by his wife and children. His brother Michael was
assigned to the same employer at Limestones Plains, as was
their cousin Mary Blackburn.
Patrick and Johanna eventually ran a dairy herd on Yarralumla
on the area now known as the Yarralumla nursery towards
Kurrajong Point. Patrick had an untimely death in 1866.
Interestingly, a Sheehy family is looking for Ivers relations
in Australia also;-
My family is from Springmount in Rathkeale, Limerick. In 1866
a Mary Kate Sheehy (Mother Gertrude) arrived from Irelland to
Bathurst in N.S.W. to found the Sisters of Mersy in Australia.
She was followed by her sister Charlotte Anne in 1868 (Sr Bernard).
In 1898 their neice Sr Patrick (also Charlotte) professed in
Bathurst. These are all related to me and there were reputed to
be ather relatives which I would like to trace . the only clue
I have to them is the surname Ievers (sic) who were supposed to be
cousins. I would be grateful for any information on any decendants.
The first 2 named parents were Edward Sheehy and Mary Anne
De Courcy Sheehy. I have been in Australia since 1973.

I am much indebted to Jeanne Waugh for information
on this family.

Nicholas was a farm labourer, and was engaged by a
relative of his, William Casey, of the Cowpastures,

were living at Ginninderra [near Canberra].

landowner and both men being official large scale
mail contractors.]
Nicholas Ivers died 28th Oct 1896. at
Stanley, Beechworth.Vict. [* 15015]
son of Michael Ivers & Margaret Casey.
his age is rather oddly given as
75 years,26 weeks, and 4 days.son Michael
Ivers gave information that Nicholas
had been born at Limerick, had spent 8 years
in NSW, and 35 years in Victoria, [incorrect]
and no mention was made of Nicholas' former
marriage in Ireland.Ages of children on his
death cert are listed incorrectly.
Note: other Iver's family in Beechworth who
may be Nicholas' family..?
