Thomas Sheedy, per Blenheim.
Preface by Jenny Fawcett (with special thanks to Kay Cole nee Dempsey)
Research supports that Thomas Sheedy, arrived New South Wales per Blenheimin 1834,is the
son of John Sheedy who was transported to New South Wales aboard the Mangles in 1826.
Thomas Sheedy's death certificate confirms that he was married twice in New South Wales:
firstly to Johanna Jordan and secondly to Elizabeth Dempsey. This certificate also reveals
that of his eight children only three survived until adulthood: Mary (by his first wife
Johanna Jordan)and Thomas and Sophia (by his second wife Elizabeth Dempsey)
Thomas died at Binalong on the 2nd of February 1862,from 'the effects of intoxicating
drink' and was buried at Galong cemetery on the 4th of February.
Thomas was accompanied to New South Wales aboard the Blenheim in 1834 by his brothers Roger
and John. The vessel arrived at Sydney on the 14th of November, having departed Cork on the
27th of July. Their mother (Mary Sheedy) had arrived previously in September, aboard the
Andromeda, with her remaining children Michael,Ellen and Mary Sheedy.
The Blenheim was conveying prisoners to the colony of New South Wales, but Thomas ,Roger
and John were all described as free emigrants.
Thomas' father John Sheedy had been transported to New South Wales aboard the ship Mangles
which arrived at Sydney on the 18th of Feb 1826. In 1828 John did petition the governer
of N.S.W. requesting that his family be allowed to join him but this was denied. In that
petition John stated that he had married in Kilfinane [Kilfinan] in county Limerick,
so it is possible that Thomas was born in that region.
Thomas' father kept in contact with his family in Ireland whilst confined in New South
Wales: early in the year 1834 he wrote to Ireland to his eldest son Roger Sheedy, and in
part the letter informed the family that John was then working at the Dockyards, at Sydney.
(The letter was probably to initiate some arrangments for the family to come to
New South Wales, as John had received his certificate of Freedom in this year, and soon
after all of his family from Ireland).
Shortly after the arrival of the Blenheim in 1834 Roger and Thomas Sheedy joined the
Police force.(Their alleged uncle 'Michael Sheedy' (transported per Earl St Vincent
had also previously joined the police force at Sydney). Both Roger and Thomas spent a
period of years serving as policemen.
In 1836, Thomas Sheedy was described as '....23 years of age, able bodied, active
and intelligent. Can read and write. Has been brought up to farm work"..
Syd Sheedy (confusingly) claimed that Thomas Sheedy (son of John per Mangles) was
married to Cath Costello in New South Wales. But it needs to made quite clear that
research provides solid evidence that Thomas Sheedy who married Catherine Costello
is not the son of John Sheedy per Mangles. This man had arrived in N.S.W aboard the
Aliquis in 1839 as a Monteagle emigrant. He was originally from Shanagolden in
Limerick,(not far from Kilfinan,)and was recorded consistently until his death as
a shoemaker by trade. He moved to Victoria in the 1840's and was recorded as "well known
to police" and arrested for theft on at least one occasion. He died in gaol in Victoria.
Thomas Sheedy was approved in December of 1834 to serve as a police officer at Goulburn:
and again in February of 1836 he was approved to serve as a constable at Windsor. His
daughter Mary (by his wife Johanna) is supposed to have been born around 1845,and his
son Thomas (by his second wife Elizabeth) was born about 1850; daughter Sophia was born
about 1853.
By 1854 Thomas was living at Binalong where he worked as a horse dealer: one of his horses
was reported stolen this year from Binalong but was soon after recovered.
In 1860 his death was incorrectly reported in the Yass Courier but the announcement was
soon corrected.
The death of his first wife, the birth of his daughter Mary, have yet to be confirmed.
His death certificate records that he was born about 1810 in Limerick
Country in Ireland, and that he married Johanna Jordan at Galong when he was
32 years of age (so c 1842).No marriage record has been located for this event, nor
can the death of Johanna Sheedy be located.Thomas married in 1852 to Elizabeth Dempsey
(1820-1897) who was the daughter of John Dempsey (convict per Atlas) and Ann
Bolton (free arrival per Experiment). Elizabeth's first husband was William Parnell.
Thomas and Elizabeth Sheedy's children Sophia and Thomas Sheedy were born in the two years preceeding their marriage!
There are still some anomolies in the dates of births, deaths and marriages for this
family, and further certificates should be obtained to clarify dates.

?Mary Ann Sheedy Not listed on Elizabeth Sheedy's death cert.
No record found of her birth.
A Mary Ann Sheedy died in Victoria in 1869, but who was stated to have
been born in NSW in 1845. (death cert no 4899)
Her parents were listed as Thomas and Elizabeth Sheedy.
A Mary Ann Sheedy spent time in gaol in Melbourne: she stated she
was born c 1844 in New South Wales, and had come to Victoria aboard
the Shamrock (steamer).[src:gaol record *]
This Mary Ann Sheedy may have incorrect parents listed on her death
certificate:?
Whilst this Mary Ann Sheedy is not listed on Elizabeth's death cert,
she was originally included as a possibly child of Thomas and Elizabeth,
by the information given that she was born in NSW c 1845,the daughter
of Thomas and Elizabeth Sheedy. But her birth year would place her as
an illegitimate child of this couple, as they did not marry in NSW until
1852. I suspect that Mary Ann is not their daughter.
Sheedy's located as having travelled per Shamrock
1849.a Mrs Sheedy and two children are recorded as having arrived
at Melbourne aboard the vesselShamrock. The vessel arrived on the
5th of December, commander Geo Gilmore, having had departed Sydney on the
1st of Dec, and Twofold Bay on the 2nd.
Steerage Passengers are listed, and include the name of Mrs Sheedy and 2
children. [*3] No other Sheedys listed on this vessel.
Syd Sheedy claimed that Mrs John Sheedy Mangles made a journey to
Melbourne per Shamrock with Thomas Sheedy on her way back to
Ireland.
