Michael O'Shaughnessy

Michael O'Shaughnessy was born c 1838 in
Woodford,Galway, and died 8/8/1906 in Rheola,
Vict. [12019]
He was a blacksmith and farmer.
He had arrived at Point Henry,Geelong, on the
City of Manchester on the 11th July 1854,
with his parents. After a brief stay at Geelong,
he went with his arents to the Ballarat & Bendigo
goldfields, where they stayed for three years.
The O'Shannessy family then went to Kingower,
which became Michael's homeplace.
In 1868 Michael was a miner at Kingower, and m
Kate Sheedy at St Mary Church. For a greater
number of years Michael followed the occupation
of fencing and dam contractor in various parts of
the state.
From 1876 - 1886 the family had lived in NSW,
returning to Korong in 1886. In later years,
Michael entered into farming at the head of the
Cochranes Creek, near Welila,in conjunction with
his son Michael,until the start of WW1,when this
son joined the Australian Infantry.
Michael snr then resided at Rheola, until his
death.
Upon Michael's death in 1916, his funeral was
largely attended as he was widely known and highly
respected.
He was remembered as one of the pioneers of the
Korong district.
