Thomas Sheady McNamara bc1829 Clare. Soldier in the 21st Regiment
by Jenny Fawcett
Thomas Sheady McNamara / Thomas Sheedy Macnamara
According to his war service records (PRO KEW.ENG - WO 97/438),Thomas Sheady Macnamara
was born in or near the town of Co Clare around the year 1828.
On the 13th of June 1846 Thomas enlisted in the 24th Regiment of Foot. He was then
described as being a labourer, 5 feet 6 1/2 inches tall, brown hair and brown? eyes and
of a pale complexion.
(Serg?) G.Gilles was the enlisting officer who enrolled Thomas, he recorded that
Thomas was "not an apprentice, not married, not ruptured lame etc) indicating that
Thomas was in good health and fit enough to serve. Gilles also recorded that Thomas
had not had any prior service in the Militia, Mariners, Navy nor East India company,
nor had Thomas applied before for service in the militia.
On the 22nd of June Thomas was re-examined at Cork and cleared as being fit for
service by an army surgeon.
Oddly, Thomas was discharged at Chatham under a month later, no reason is recorded
on this service history source.
